5 Lucrative Work at Home Jobs Vs Direct Sales

There was recently a headline on Yahoo! news that looked at 5 professionals who have made a living working from home, earning $50k per in their first year. It should be noted that while Yahoo! makes this sound easy, a few of these professions require certifications, schooling, or extensive training/practice. While I think this is great for the people who achieved their success, read on to see why I think they are shooting short…

The professions listed were:

1.) Cynthia, Public Relations Professional
-Earned $50k first year
-Working from home 3 years
-Requires pitching stories, copywriting, coaching small business owners to position themselves as leaders.
-Expects to make $60k next year

My Take:
Professional copywriters can make well over $60k per year. Look at John Carlton, Ben Settle, Yanik Silver, Dan Kennedy or any body making quality websites online. Copywriting is a skill that must be learned, but the learning curve is not that steep. For the three years she has put into “working from home,” she could have invested three years of their life studying copywriting and tripling her income.

2.) Rick, Graphic Designer
-Earned $40k first year
-Working from home 7 years
-Currently making 6 figures

My Take:
Good for him. He followed his passion, and the money followed. He is an artist. Many people are not as passionate about creating art as this fellow. Developing that skill set takes time, patience, and discipline. It is not as easy as Yahoo! make it sound.

3.) Lori, Realtor
-Makes at least $50k per year
-Working from home 3 years

My Take:
Obviously, this is a tough time to be a realtor. And I’m sorry, but $50k is just not enough for someone working full time. As Lori says in the article, “To make at least $50k in this industry, you have to be a go-getter and you have to do it full-time, unless you are pretty lucky.”

I’m sorry, but luck has absolutely nothing to do with it. You have to work hard. Besides having to be certified to be a realtor, one must fight hard going uphill with the current housing market.

4.) Ed, Freelance writer
-Earned $50k first year
-Working from home six years

My take:
Ed spells it out more clearly than the others: “[$50k per year] is more doable for someone who has had more jobs and is out in the business for a while. It’s just like any profession where it’s better to work for a while and build up some subject matter expertise.”

5.) Jerry, Financial Planner
-Hit $50k mark after 4 years

My take:
Seriously, why would you want to take financial advice from someone who earns less than you do?

For all these professions, there was a lot more involved, whether it be training, experience, certification, or just plain discipline to stick it out for a long period of time. Is it possible to live your dream career from home? Absolutely. Just be prepared for bumps in the road, and make sure that the career you are creating is one that you actually want.

A Better Way:
For the amount of time, effort, and probably expense that these professionals put into their careers, they could have each made a much more substantial income in a direct sales career. They all have the skill sets required, from copywriting, to networking, to basic sales skills. Depending on the opportunity, direct sales gives most people the potential to earn $100k their first year, given the same amount of dedication these individuals displayed. There is also generally a shorter work week, such as 30-35 hours per week.

As Robert Kiyosaki of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” fame states, “You will never truly be free until you are financially free.” A direct sales career can give you that freedom.

Do yourself a favor and do your due diligence. Review a direct sales opportunity that offers a REALISTIC six figure first year potential. As the name implies, it gives you the opportunity to rise to the top.
