Work at Home Idea:
Retirement Work – More Work at Home Ideas

I’ve been saying for a long time that the two most important things in retirement are health and wealth. Without either one of these, retired life becomes more of a chore than a pleasure. If we don’t have enough money or if our health is not good, we can’t enjoy the quality of life we want. One hundred years ago, Wallace Wattles said in his book “The science of Getting Rich” that having enough money is essential to enjoying life. The economic downturn has made it necessary for a lot of seniors to continue to work or look for other ways to create more income just to enjoy the standard of living that they once had. Many have turned on their entrepreneurial spirit and turned to the internet to try things that they would not considered in the past.

There is a lot of written material about internet marketing and many experts available who will gladly show you how to make money online (usually for a small nominal fee). Most of the information is available for free, but it takes time to find it and learn how to apply it. And, the devil is in the details. One thing that I have learned is that there is a vast difference between having an online job and an online business. Some people who start a business fail, because they are in fact, looking for a job. Most people are perfectly happy doing a job that they get paid for. There is nothing wrong with that, that’s just the way it is. Sometimes, the job can take the form of a business. In either case, when you work at home, you are the boss, set your own hours and determine how much you will earn for your efforts.

The hard part about getting an online job that can be a business is finding one. Most require some specialized training and contacts just to get started. The easiest way is to find someone who has been there and is willing to show you how (again, there is that small nominal fee). Ideally, the area you get into is something you are familiar with and the learning curve will be much shorter.

Some work at home jobs that could be a business include such things as:

1. Dog training. Most people who have dogs are able to train their dogs to be good companions. If you watch trainers at your local petsmart or talk to a dog trainer, you will find that it is not rocket science, but does take understanding and a love of dogs. Being a dog trainer can be both exciting and rewarding. If you love dogs, and would like to know how to get started becoming a certified, professional dog trainer, you’ll get there much more quickly and easily when you know all the other facets that will help you to become a truly successful dog trainer.

2. Part time office cleaning. This is a business idea that can be used anywhere and it does not take a lot of money to start. Many years ago, I had an opportunity to meet a “janitor” who started with one office building and a borrowed vacuum cleaner. Quality work and referrals helped him grow his business and he eventually sold it to a national service.

3. Medical transcription is an area that is popular. With the right training you could be running your own business in a short amount of time. This is a business model that takes some connections and it might be easier to work with someone to get started. But the job could give you flexibility to work when you want and you might still be able make $25 to $30 an hour.

4. Non-emergency medical transportation is an area that is not very well known. How many times have you taken a relative to a doctor’s appointment or a clinic. Think about this, it does not require a special license and there is no specific training needed for non-emergency medical transportation. This is one opportunity that you may already have everything you need to start.

There are many opportunities available to start a work at home business that a retired person can do. The most difficult thing will be to make a decision and take action. I personally know that it is a lot easier to stay in your comfort zone and avoid the stress of going into a new venture. However, I also know that the trip is worth the journey and things get easier with familiarity.

I would recommend that whatever you decide, do your homework. Check out any opportunity carefully before you open your wallet. Be prepared to spend a lot of time learning the ropes and don’t give up if the going get rough.
