Small Business Idea #270 : A Simple Business Idea That Anyone Can Start In Their Own Local Area!

By John Reece

I would like to tell you about a simple business a friend of mine set up around eight years ago that is still going strong today. He doesn’t like computers and decided to start a business where he could get away without using one. That said, I think he has since realised that they can be useful from time to time.

He hires a large hall for one day.

Fills it with stalls.

Places a few adverts in local papers and specialist magazines.

Collects an entrance fee on the day.

He basically organizes day sales for antiques, crafts, art, computers, coin/stamp collectors and other specialist events and happily makes a really good full time living by doing two to four of these each month.

His job consists of first finding a decent venue to hold such an event, which could be a local community hall, sports hall, large hotel events room or whatever he can find that is suitable with ample parking space for visitors and able to supply tables to use as stalls. Once he finds a suitable place it can be used to host many different events over the coming years.

The next job is to work out how many stalls he can reasonably get into the room making sure there is sufficient space between each stall and plenty of room for the public to move around. Ideally the floor space should be able to accommodate twenty to forty stalls.

Next comes the advertising bit. He puts ads in all the local papers advertising the event and asks for any interested antique dealers (could be any other niche I just happened to pick antiques for this example) to contact him for booking arrangements. He sends posters advertising the event to all local antique shops offering them a discount for a stall if they display the poster in their shop window. The advertising normally starts two months before each event and posters are put up on the day to catch passers-by.

His main costs for the event will be advertising and the hire of the room but money will come in from the renting of the stalls and the admission charge on the door. If he rents out lets say thirty stalls at an average cost of $70 per stall and charges $5 admission charge for adults with children being free his income could be:

Stalls $70 x 30 = $2100

Admissions $5 x 500 = $2500

On top of this he always serves refreshments, serving hot and cold drinks with a selection of snacks. This can considerably increase his profits over the day because he will be the only stall there selling refreshments. Profits from his stall can easily be $800 for an average day.

So his income for an average sized event could be around $5400.

Less expenses for advertising and hiring the room at around $1600.

Total profit being around $3800.

Not bad for organizing one event. Just imagine if you were to organize one of these events every two weeks at different venues.

Although this opportunity won’t suit everybody, it’s pretty basic stuff that most people with average intelligence could easily master. Makes you think doesn’t it!
